Huntingdon homes reach level 5
Posted: 15/07/2010
An eco-homes scheme which will be among the greenest in the country has been launched in Huntingdon. The 29 flats and houses at Greenhart Grove have been built to the Code for Sustainable Homes Level 5, one step below the highest possible category and are well above the energy-efficiency levels of the typical home.
The low-carbon homes have some of the most environmentally advanced technology available, including photo-voltaic panels, solar heated water, a heat recovery system, grey water recycling, smart metering, insulated panels, triple glazing and planted roofs.
Huntingdonshire District Council, which owned the site off Mayfield Road, wanted to use the land to build a sustainable, eco-friendly housing scheme and it has been developed with Circle Anglia Housing Group.
Cllr Ian Bates, council leader, said: “We are confident that the development will be an example that others will follow.
“It sends a clear message that we are taking responsibility to tackle climate change seriously and we are prepared to lead the transition to a low-carbon economy.”
He added: “We believe that Greenhart Grove provides a blueprint for sustainable living as an affordable, inspiring place in which people will be proud to live.”
A time capsule, including items associated with the development, was buried at the site with the aim of showing future generations the thinking behind technology from 2010.
Cambridgeshire Horizons and the Homes and Communities Agency provided funding for the project and Anglian Water helped with ideas to minimise water usage.
