Affordable homes to be built on 'brownforest ' land
Posted: 01/04/2007
An innovative approach to developing affordable housing by using surplus Forestry Commission Wales land has taken another step forward recently, with planning permission granted for three houses at Dinas Mawddwy, Gwynedd.
In 2004, Environment, Planning and Countryside Minister Carwyn Jones asked FC Wales to investigate the potential of developing affordable housing on surplus land and brownfield sites it manages. Dinas Mawddwy and a site at Ceinws, Powys, are the first two sites identified as suitable for development.
The Minister said, “This is a policy tailor-made in Wales. Previously, surplus FC Wales land would just have been sold to private buyers on the open market with little control over how it would be used. Now, we are using that land to make a positive difference by providing affordable housing in areas where it is needed.
“All such developments will be designed and built sustainably and, because we have made it a condition that FC Wales has to give consent for any future transfer of houses, we have also ensured that these developments remain affordable and do not end up on the open market.”
The development will be taken forward by Tai Clwyd Housing, a long-established association with experience in developing and managing affordable housing in mid- and north Wales.
