Solar & Wind Powered Recycling Centre For Hull
Posted: 05/09/2006
Residents in Hull will soon benefit from one of the most environment-friendly recycling centres in the region. Work is about to begin on a new household waste recycling facility in Wiltshire Road, west Hull, powered by a wind turbine and solar panels. The split-level facility will largely be constructed from recycled materials and will be landscaped and undercover.
A car park for local businesses and residents is also being constructed after public consultation. Coun David Woods, city council portfolio holder for the environment, said: "Recycling more of our waste is an important part of reducing the amount of waste that we send to landfill.
"The new site will complement the kerbside black box and blue bin scheme, community recycling facilities and existing recycling sites at Wilmington and Burma Drive. It will also play a part in helping to raise recycling rates in the city. "The more options residents have to participate in recycling, the better. "The new site will mean less travel time for those who live nearer to Wiltshire Road than the existing two sites. Shorter journeys also mean less pollution, which in turn is better for the environment."
Construction is expected to take about six months with the site due to open in spring 2007. Wiltshire Road is the second recycling facility to be built in a three-year programme which will provide Hull with three new household waste recycling sites. A third site in Sutton Fields has received planning permission with construction due to start there early next year.
The sites are expected to play a key role in meeting the city's target of recycling at least 45 per cent of household waste by 2010.
