Work Starts On Testway's Green Development
Posted: 05/06/2006
Hampshire based Testway Housing have celebrated the start of construction on a new development environmentally friendly homes with an event themed around low energy and the environment. Environmental science students from the local FE College in Andover made a cup of tea for MP, Sir George Young and other guests using water heated by solar energy.
In line with the environment theme guests were encouraged to leave their cars at home. Sir George and Lady Young responded by arriving on their tandem.
The five houses and 12 flats are being built using innovative building techniques to reduce heat loss, which means cheaper heating bills for residents and cuts carbon dioxide emissions into the atmosphere. Four of the properties will be available for shared ownership, helping people to get on the property ladder.
Testway’s director of development and property, Chris Francis said: “This is an exciting new project and a first for Testway. The development will provide much needed new homes for the area and we hope to provide more properties of this kind in the future.”
The project, which costs £2.5 million, is an excellent example of the working partnership between Testway, Aster, Test Valley Borough Council, who provided the land which was left unused for 10 years, and the Housing Corporation, which provided grant funding of £1,175,000. Housing Corporation Director for the South East, Fiona Cruickshank said: “I am pleased that Housing Corporation funding is helping to provide homes for rent and shared ownership in Andover which will make a difference for local families in need of housing.
"We especially welcome the inclusion of a number of energy-efficient features in this scheme which will reduce the cost to the families living in these homes, as well as being environmentally friendly.” The development is due to be completed in summer 2007.
