A Green House Made Of Straw

An exciting project to construct a building out of straw bales is well under way at Norton Priory Museum and Gardens, Cheshire. The initiative began in September, and a team of staff and volunteers have been working hard to complete the foundations and most of the north and west walls. Once the project is completed in spring, the 'Eco-Building' will be standing on the Priory's Walled Garden site - as well as being made out of straw it will feature a living roof and solar panels.

Ranger Alex Pearson said: 'We're really pleased with the progress made so far, and would like to thank the volunteers who have got involved. The project really does offer a unique opportunity to do something really different, and the end result should be fantastic.' Eventually to be known as 'The Green House', the building will allow Norton Priory to expand its work in terms of education for schools and work with the local community. It will also be available as a resource for local groups to use themselves.

The project is funded by Waste Recycling Group Ltd and administered by WREN through the Landfill Tax Credit Scheme. Richard Smith, project manager at WREN said: 'We are extremely pleased to be involved in this innovative project to construct an environ-mentally friendly building in the historic Walled Garden. Not only will the new building serve as prime example of sustainable building techniques, making extensive use of recycled materials but it will provide a much needed community resource in the area.'
