EVENT - Straw Bale /Timber Construction Day

A one day seminar on Straw bale and Timber Construction for building professionals and interested practitioners will be held on Friday June 24th 2005. The seminar will take place in a straw bale and timber frame house being built in Totnes (The Carfrae House). There will be a guided tour of the work in progress with the opportunity to discuss the structural techniques used and their alternatives, the implications of choosing the sustainable route and some of the real world decisions/compromises that are involved. Straw Bale Barn
Helen & Kevin Ireland built a workshop/store in 1999 on Dartmoor as a
feasibility study; bolted frame with straw bale infill using no cement or concrete. It is on stone blocks and post & beam foundation with lime rendered walls and corrugated iron roof. Moisture content of the straw bales has been monitored, as has rainfall.
Environmental Building Programmes, University of Plymouth
Dr Steve Goodhew is undertaking research on moisture monitoring, Thermal conductivity of straw bales and the environmental performance of straw bale buildings.
