Winchester eco homes complete

Winchester City Council has announced the completion of six new affordable 'eco-homes'. The low carbon homes were developed by Atlantic Housing Ltd and were built on a previously disused City Council allotment site between Great Field Road and Trussell Crescent in Weeke.

The site, which received funding from the Housing Corporation of £365,000, comprises six houses for general needs rent with car parking, front and rear gardens, communal access and landscaping.

The homes have been awarded Ecohomes 'Excellent' status by the Building Research Establishment (BRE).

They have been designed to have minimal impact on the environment by incorporating a number of key features such as:

- Low carbon dioxide emissions
- Extensive insulation to minimise heat-loss
- Water saving devises
- Responsibly sourced timber from sustainable forests
- Provisions for storage of cycles
- Provisions for surrounding wildlife
- Planting of trees and plants to attract further wildlife

The Ecohomes 'Excellent' award also took into consideration the location of the homes. The development is situated close to public transport links and local amenities, which will allow residents to be less reliant on cars and subsequently reduce their carbon emissions.

Councillor Tony Coates, Winchester City Council's Portfolio Holder for Housing and Communities, said: "The City Council is very proud to be part of a project like this. Opinions about climate change may be varied, but I'm sure everyone will agree that producing new affordable homes in this environmentally responsible way can only be a good thing."

Peter Walters, Chief Executive of First Wessex Housing Group (of which Atlantic Housing is a subsidiary), added: "We are delighted to be involved in providing much needed high quality, affordable, environmentally friendly housing within the city of Winchester.

"The fact that all homes are already occupied demonstrates the high demand for such housing within the city. We look forward to developing more opportunities to meet Winchester's housing needs in the future."

Construction first started on site in December 2006 and work was completed in early October this year. All homes are now occupied.

Throughout the development Atlantic Housing Limited and Winchester City Council worked in partnership with CH Design Partnership, Richard Crane Associates, Welling Partnership Property & Construction Consultants and PMC Construction and Development Services Ltd.
