Southwark Builds Eco - Bungalows
Posted: 30/12/2005
A London borough has is building bungalows for the first time in more than 30 years. But rather than temporary prefabs, the new homes being built by Southwark Council incorporate state-of-the-art technology designed to make them as eco-friendly as possible. The new project replaces 1940s prefabs which have come to the end of their lifespan in Athenlay Road, Nunhead.
Four one-bedroom bungalows have already welcomed in tenants, who are now enjoying the benefits of the eco-homes, which aim to minimise pollution, use environmentally-friendly materials, and conserve energy and water. Among the features is a solar hot water system, supported by a gas heating system, and a further three bungalows will be completed in June 2006.
Councillor Stephen Flannery, executive member for housing, said: “Many of those living in the old prefabs were elderly, so it was vital that the replacement homes were of a very high standard and included additional features for the disabled.
“This project shows that even on a small scale, it is possible to build quality homes which do not damage the environment.”
