16 million UK residents offered insulation

Posted: 10/04/2008

A total of 16 million homeowners and private tenants across the UK will have been contacted by the Heat Project by end of May 2008. The scheme's direct mail campaign has aimed to increase the take up of available grant funding for increased home energy efficiency.

The large scale mailing is a result of increased funding by utility companies under the Government led initiative, CERT (Carbon Emissions Reduction Target. The scheme aims to capitalise on a growing green conscience among consumers as a result of greater media coverage and awareness of the environment and global warming issues.

Homes from Northumberland down to the tip of the South-West have been contacted by the Heat Project during its Autumn-Spring campaign, which commenced in September 2007. The direct mail drive is a pro-active attempt to reinforce the issue of energy efficiency in the home, and promote the significant reduction in the UK’s carbon emissions and individuals carbon footprints which can be acheived by installing loft and cavity wall insulation.

Loft and cavity wall insulation can save the average household around £200 of its annual fuel bill and cut domestic carbon emissions by nearly two tonnes. The campaign by the Heat Project has already produced extremely positive results, helped further by the recent inclusion of an over 70s category.

This entitles all homeowners and private tenants over the age of 70 to free insulation, in addition to those who are already elegible because they are in receipt of income or disability related benefits. Since announcing the over 70s initiative in January, the Heat Project has reported an impressive 25% increase in responses among this age group. As the older population are disproportionately likely to be living in fuel poverty, the insulation scheme could result in a significant drop in the number of fuel poor households.
