Work about to start on Suffolk green homes
Posted: 29/05/2008
Work on 15 new affordable eco homes in Thetford is set to start this summer, a housing association announced last week. Suffolk Housing Society was granted planning permission to build a mix of four flats and 11 homes for rent, sale or shared ownership off Jubilee Close last year.
The association's management board approved the £2m green development on Wednesday, which will include environmental features to reduce noise pollution and save energy and water. They will also include a flexible living feature to allow the one bedroom homes to be easily converted to two bedrooms if required by the new owner or tenant.
Steve Clarke, chief executive of Suffolk Housing Society, said the Thetford scheme, which will include air source heating pumps and rainwater harvesting, was “very exciting”.
“We know that there is a huge need for affordable housing in Norfolk and Suffolk and are aware that in today's climate there is an added need to help the environment and save money. This development of eco homes in Thetford has been in the pipeline for some time, so I am extremely pleased that the board has given the green light so that building work can start on these new homes,” he said.
Building work by Brooks and Wood of Ipswich is set to start in July, with the aim of completion by spring next year.
