New green council houses for Derbyshire families
Posted: 08/11/2007
Work has started on a scheme to build 10 environmentally friendly homes in Derbyshire by housing consortium Quantum. Amber Valley Housing, part of the Quantum consortium, is leading the project on Hands Road, Heanor, and is aiming to have completed the homes by the spring.
Developers Robert Woodhead Ltd are building the homes using an innovative eco-friendly timber based building walling system, Kingspan Tek, supplied and erected by Nottinghamshire-based K-Panels Ltd.
The system uses a high level of insulation to reduce the home’s carbon footprint, resulting in minimal heating requirements and lower bills for tenants. It is constructed off-site, which minimises site waste and reduces landfill.
Using this system means the scheme to achieve an excellent EcoHomes rating, construction waste is kept down and the quality of the homes is kept high.
Initially it was planned to let five of the three-bed five-person homes, while the remaining five were to be sold for shared ownership on the open market.
But in response to the chronic under-supply of three-bedroom homes for general needs rent in the area, Amber Valley Housing applied for additional funding from the Housing Corporation and won a grant of £340,000.
Now, all ten of the much-needed homes will be rented out to families on Amber Valley Borough Council’s waiting list.
Martin Sherman, Director of Asset Management and Development, said: “Quantum is meeting tomorrow’s building standards today, using the cutting edge of eco-friendly design, benefiting everyone by lessening the impact on the environment.
“It is great news that all ten homes can now be rented out and the families who move in will enjoy warm, secure homes with reduced heating bills.”
