Housing association goes batty
Posted: 04/01/2007
A new housing development providing ‘green’ and affordable homes in Waltham Forest, London is encouraging bats to take up residence with the installation of specially designed bat boxes. The boxes installed are of a roost type designed to encourage bats to take up residence in the summer months.
The Lea Bridge Road development by ASRA Greater London Housing Association, part of the LHA-ASRA group, and Telford Homes has also been classed as having an Eco Homes rating of ‘Very Good’ and boasts energy efficient boilers.
All the timber used throughout the development comes from sustainable sources and the homes have low energy light bulbs fitted in each bedroom, water butts and were constructed to minimise their carbon footprint (the amount of carbon dioxide emitted during construction and when built).
Mukhtar Latif, LHA-ASRA group development director, said: “We have worked with Waltham Forest Council and Telford Homes to provide both green and affordable living at Lea Bridge Road.”
In November 2006, Waltham Forest Council's cabinet member for housing, Councillor Marie Pye and the Mayor of Waltham Forest, Councillor Farooq Qureshi joined representatives from ASRA Greater London Housing Association and Telford Homes for a tour of the buildings and a ribbon cutting ceremony.
The new development boasts 20 homes in Wadsworth Court and a further 35 at Hennessey Court, both in Lea Bridge Road. A total of 31 properties are shared ownership, with the others available for rent.
Wadsworth Court is made up of nine, one bedroom apartments, 12 two bedroom apartments and one three bedroom apartment while Hennessey Court comprises ten, one bedroom and 25, two bedroom apartments.
Both schemes have communal open space, off street parking and bicycle storage facilities.
